This year marks the 30th anniversary of CellaVision. Since 1994, CellaVision has grown from a small company with just a few employees to a leader in digital microscopy. Today, we have over 230 employees, have sold more than 8000 units, and maintain a presence in more than 40 countries. To celebrate our 30th anniversary, let’s dive deeper into our remarkable journey, groundbreaking innovations, and successful partnerships we built throughout the years.

Humble beginnings
In 1994, Christer Fåhraeus founded CellaVision with the goal of developing automated microscopic analysis. Initially, the idea was to create a multifunctional machine that could make stain and image slides. This included a patented circular microscope designed to spin samples and create a monolayer. However, this ambitious project was set aside when Yvonne Mårtensson joined the company as CEO in 1998. The company then decided to focus solely on imaging and AI.
Simultaneously, CellaVision developed CellAtlas, envisioned as a web-based cell encyclopedia with monthly subscriptions. Although this subscription model was eventually abandoned, CellAtlas became a public section of the website before evolving into a free app in 2011.

Staining reagents and sample preparation devices
In 2019, CellaVision strategically acquired RAL Diagnostics, a French company with a 100-year history originating from the Louis Pasteur Institute. Acquiring RAL Diagnostics enabled CellaVision to offer a more comprehensive suite of products.
Advancing Diagnostics: The Future of Microscopy
As global healthcare demand rises, the need for fast and reliable diagnostics has become increasingly critical. Celebrating 30 years of innovation, the commitment to transforming digital microscopy and enhancing patient care remains stronger than ever.
"As we mark this milestone, our commitment to innovation and excellence remains unwavering. Here’s to the next 30 years of advancing the future of microscopy and efficiency of healthcare globally" Simon Østergaard, President and CEO.

A major focus for the future centers on the groundbreaking Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy (FPM), acquired in 2021. This cutting-edge technology generates high-resolution images using low-magnification optics, opening up new possibilities beyond hematology. These developments have the potential to revolutionize microscopy and enhance patient care on a global scale.
